Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve extends 175km to the north of a one-kilometre long barrage that spans the Koshi River. The reserve was established in 1976 to protect the wild water buffaloes. The barrage, marshes, lagoons, mudflats and wetland offer excellent bird watching opportunities with over 485 bird species recorded. Nature walks through Koshi Tappu offer spectacular views of Himalayan peaks including Makalu (8,463m), the 5th highest mountain in the world. The reserve is easily accessible by air from Kathmandu to Biratnagar (45 minutes flight) followed by 1.5 hours drive, or by scenic road journey, or by rafting down the Sun Koshi River.
